Getting Into Porn: How To Start A Career in the Adult Industry

Updated on:

Ever wondered how to break into the adult industry?

Whether you’re dreaming of becoming a porn star, a cam model, a fetish performer, or even just holding the boom mic while someone gets boomed… there’s a whole ecosystem of porn jobs that go far beyond what you see on screen.

In this guide, we’re lifting the lid on what it takes to start a career in porn, where to find legitimate job opportunities (➡️ jump to our list of agencies and job directories), and how to navigate the application process without getting scammed or overwhelmed.

We’re focusing mainly on porn performance and modeling roles, plus a few side gigs like phone sex, fetish work and camming, so the kind of stuff where your personality and stamina count just as much as your assets.

Note: While we’ve left out escorting (because of the legal issues), some of the job boards listed do still feature that kind of work.

What Do We Mean by “Working in the Porn Industry”?

How to get into porn

Before we dive in, let’s clarify what we mean when we talk about the adult industry (AKA, the sex industry). This covers a wide range of work, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes.

On the performance side, it includes roles like:

  • Porn Actor or Actress
  • Live Cam Model
  • Stripper
  • Glamour or Erotic Model
  • Fetish Performer
  • Sex Club Host
  • Phone Sex Operator
  • Independent Sex Workers (escorts, erotic masseurs, call girls, etc.)

It also extends to supporting roles that make the industry function, the unsung heroes if you will: producers, directors, photographers, camera crew, editors, web developers, marketers, and more.

For the purposes of this feature, we’re focusing primarily on porn performersmodels, and other performance-based jobs. If you’re male and looking to break into adult film specifically, check out our separate guide — since the route in (and the demand) can look very different.

Many of the agencies and job boards listed below also post roles for crew members, production staff, webmasters, and other technical or back-office positions.

Basic Requirements for Working in Porn

how to get into porn

Before you can start performing in porn — whether for a studio, a cam site, or your own content — there are a few basic requirements that apply pretty much anywhere in the world.

Wherever you work, you will be required to meet some basic administrative checks including a right to work permit and hold the relevant tax paperwork.

✅ Age Verification

You must be at least 18 years old to work in the adult industry. In some countries or with certain companies, you may need to be 21 or over. No exceptions here… reputable platforms and studios are legally obligated to verify your age.

They don’t want another Traci Lords situation, right?!

✅ Legal and Tax Documents

If you’re working with a professional company, you’ll need to provide valid ID and proof of your right to work in that country. This usually includes:

  • Government-issued photo ID
  • Work permit or visa (if applicable)
  • Tax identification or relevant local paperwork

Studios should also provide a model release form or contract that outlines your consent to be filmed or photographed — and your rights regarding that content.

✅ STI Testing (for On-Set Porn Work)

If you’re planning to work with other performers, you’ll be required to undergo regular STI testing. In most major porn hubs like California or Prague, you’ll need to show a recent test (typically within 14 days) covering:

  • HIV
  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Syphilis
  • Hepatitis B & C (sometimes)

Studios usually require results from an approved clinic, and they’ll likely check your test via systems like Talent Testing Service or PASS. If you’re just doing solo content or camming, this obviously doesn’t apply — but getting tested regularly is still a good idea, especially if you’re involving sexual partners.

❌ Porn God Bod

Alright, what don’t you need?

Let’s start by trashing the myth that you need a pornstar-sized dick or Hollywood-level looks. While being conventionally attractive can open doors (especially with big-budget studios), the adult industry has room for all kinds of body types, kinks, and niches… especially in 2025.

What matters more is your:

  • Confidence and comfort being naked on camera
  • Openness to different types of content or performances
  • Strong work ethic and professionalism
  • Genuine enjoyment of sex (and performing on demand)

This is a job where people will literally see everything… so being body-positive and comfortable in your own skin is key. I’m not sure why you’d consider a career in porn if you didn’t already check this box, but it’s important to stress nonetheless!

How to Apply for Jobs in the Porn Industry

Yes, even in porn — you still have to actually apply for the job.

Whether you’re aiming to be a performer, cam model, fetish star, or part of a studio crew, there’s a familiar process involved. And while it might not involve a three-piece suit or a boardroom interview, you’ll still need to show professionalism, prep some materials, and pass a few checks.

Here’s what I’d recommend to newcomers:

Step 1: Know What You’re Applying For

Sounds obvious, but you’d be amazed how many applicants just spam any opportunity they see…

If you’re applying as a porn performer, expect to answer some fairly intimate questions, like:

  • What types of scenes are you comfortable performing in?
  • Do you have any particular “skills” or fetishes you’re open to exploring on camera?
  • Are there any hard limits or medical conditions the agency should know about?

Crew roles (like videographers, editors, stylists, or makeup artists) are much more traditional in format — you’ll need to demonstrate your experience, show a portfolio, and probably explain why you’re drawn to working in the adult space. Gotta address that elephant in the room, right?!

screen test porn work
A screen test ensures that you are right for work in the adult industry. Image via XNXX.

Step 2: Submit Photos (Non-Nude, But High-Quality)

Most agencies will request several recent photos to assess your general appearance. These don’t need to be nude — unless explicitly asked for — but they should show off your body and face clearly, ideally in flattering light and high resolution.

Think of it like a Tinder profile for porn casting: no filters, no weird angles, and no group shots.

These photos will be assessed as part of your portfolio, and will inevitably help producers decide whether to bring you in for a chat.

Step 3: Pre-Interview Screening

Before you get anywhere near a camera, most agencies will do an initial screening. Expect to go through:

  • Phone or email interviews (boring but necessary)
  • Questionnaires about your background and availability
  • Discussions about travel, scheduling, and legal documents

If you pass this stage, you may be invited to a face-to-face meeting, either at the agency’s office or on set.

Step 4: The In-Person Interview (And Possibly a Screen Test)

Now here’s where things start getting interesting!

When you attend your first in-person meeting, dress how you feel most comfortable, but be prepared: some agencies may ask you to take part in a screen test.

This isn’t a full-blown sex scene, you can think of it as a short test to assess your comfort on camera and how you present yourself. That means:

  • Be clean, fresh, and well-groomed
  • Shave, wax, trim — whatever your normal routine is
  • Come camera-ready (but no need for full glam or over-styling)

For women, the goal is to check confidence, presence, and chemistry. For men, let’s just say they’ll be checking whether you can get (and stay) hard under pressure… not everyone passes the test, and stage fright is real.

If you wanted a career in porn, the dream might die a fast death at this stage. 😂

You’ll probably also be asked to sign a model release form before the screen test. Basically, this gives the agency or studio permission to record and keep your footage (though it’s rarely distributed publicly).

Some agencies offer compensation for the screen test, and may even reimburse your travel or lodging. Others won’t. It depends on the prestige/budget of the company in question.

Step 5: Get Your Tests Done

Before performing with other talent, most studios require mandatory STI testing, including:

  • HIV
  • Gonorrhea
  • Chlamydia
  • Syphilis
  • Hepatitis (still varies by region)

These must usually be completed within 14 days of the shoot date, and results should come from an approved testing provider (this will be made clear). You’ll bring these results to the agency or set before you’re allowed to shoot.

Note: A screen test does not involve sex… if only because full-panel STI testing results must be on file before any sexual activity takes place. If this isn’t followed? Immediate red flag. 🚩

Where To Find Work in the Adult Industry

So, that’s how you get into porn… but who are you going to work for?

Whilst agencies work directly with adult businesses to find talent, job boards and classified directories are a good place to start if you are looking to find work.

However, this can mean that the companies advertising have not been qualified in any way so there is no guarantee that the roles offered are genuine.

Here are some comprehensive agencies and job directories, covering the adult industry all over the world:

Red-Life

https://red-life.com

Red-Life
RegionsMostly Europe (some worldwide coverage)
Types of WorkAll aspects of the adult industry

A European hub for adult jobs that covers all the bases, RED-Life has sections for porn film casting, erotic modeling, cam work, even massage and escorting (for those who cross into other adult services).

It’s multilingual and has an active forum + blog, which is awesome for newbies to ask questions and read up on industry gossip. If you’re in the UK or EU, this site makes you feel less alone. And if you’re just getting started, it’s an excellent way to network with other aspiring stars.

For finding work, filter by country and you’ll see listings from local producers (no need to fly to LA for everything!). It’s heavily Euro-focussed, but there’s also ads for the USA, Australia, Asia and even the UAE. 🤨

XBIZ.net

https://www.xbiz.net

XBiz
RegionsWorldwide
Types of WorkAll aspects of the adult industry (mostly B2B)

You might want to put on a collared shirt for this one.

XBIZ.net is the adult industry’s professional networking platform, home to over 27,000 industry members. It’s like LinkedIn meets Facebook for porn: you join (free), make a profile, and you’ll see discussions, news, and even job opportunity listings posted by studios and directors.

As a newbie, you might think “Why would I join?” – but listen, plenty of directors and recruiters scout on XBIZ.net or at least post “Need female talent in Vegas this week” in the boards. By lurking and interacting, you not only spot gigs, you also soak up knowledge from industry vets (and trust me, the tips and war stories they share are priceless).

Plus, it’s a great way to show you’re serious about a career, not just dabbling.

I created an XBIZ.net account for my work here on AdultVisor, and the site has proven incredibly useful over the years. There’s a lot of B2B chat, but for an aspiring actor/actress, there’s networking gold waiting to be tapped.

UnHoly Jobs

https://unholyjobs.com

Unholy Jobs
RegionsWorldwide
Types of WorkAll aspects of the adult industry

Interesting branding… but don’t let that put you off!

UnHolyJobs is a legit free adult job classifieds site.

It’s like Craigslist for sexy jobs, but better organized. You can browse acting/modeling gigs, posting after posting, without paying a cent.

Many indie producers and smaller studios love this site because, well, free is good. As a newcomer, you can respond to casting calls or even post a “hire me” ad advertising what skills you bring to the table.

It’s low-frills, but I’ve seen genuine porn casting notices on here amid the cam and phone-sex jobs.

Most of the acting roles are based in the US, however there are various modelling gigs that accept remote postings (providing video/image content, etc).

A Warning About Porn Jobs

Finally, we just wanted to offer some cautionary advice as, sadly, not everyone operating in the adult industry is as upstanding as the rest.

There are many jobs (particularly in modeling and porn) that are reported on directories that offer a ton of money to entice men and women to come and perform for them.

Sadly, not all of these are genuine offers of work.

It is strongly recommended that you do not attend an interview or screen test with an agency, studio or any prospective employer alone.

Any reputable company working in the adult industry will not object to your bringing along a friend; however, you should be prepared to attend the interview and/or screen test alone.

Before you start any kind of work for a company or agency, always ensure that you have given your full consent and understand the implications of how your image(s) will be used.

There is no obligation for you to ‘perform’ for any employer if you have any reservations about them.

We strongly believe in ‘spider-senses’ and if yours start tinging at any time during your dealings then walk away.

Good luck with the porn job hunting. Maybe we’ll see you sometime…😉

Let us know if you have any other tips for how to get into porn!
